What is Domain Authority?

Domain Authority is a system that scores the quality of your site content. The better your site content the higher your ranking. If the content on your site demonstrates that you are an expert in your industry your Domain Authority will be higher.

Your Domain Authority ranking will predict how well a website will rank on search engine result pages. A Higher Domain Authority score means your website has a higher chance of ranking in search engine results. Domain Authority is calculated from a domain’s inbound links, total number of links, and the quality of those links.

How Does Domain Authority Work?

Domain Authority is scored on a 100-point scale, 1 being the lowest and 100 being the highest score – so the better your Domain Authority the higher your score will be. Websites with a large amount of high-quality inbound links have a high domain authority. The sites that rank 100 are mega sites like Amazon or Facebook.

Ultimately, the goal isn’t to get your Domain Authority score to 100, instead you should use your Domain Authority score when comparing your website to others. Comparing your score to your competitor’s sites will help you determine where your Domain Authority needs to be, and your goal is to gain a wider margin between your site and theirs.

What Affects Your Domain Authority?

Your website’s domain authority is relative to the domain authority of the highest authority website. So, even if you haven’t made any edits, but Google updates their algorithms your Domain Authority may change.

The quality of your links will also affect your Domain Authority. If you have links or website pages that come up with error pages, or if you are linking to sites with high Spam Scores, this will lower your score. In contrast, if you are linking to quality sites and maintain your website pages and links – you’ll rank with a higher Domain Authority.

How do You Improve Your Domain Authority?

First, you’ll want to see what your currently Domain Authority Score is. There are several websites that will check your domain authority for free by tying in your URL. This is a good starting point to see where your site ranks.

From there, identify the competition and compare your site to others to find the score range you should be in. When making edits to your site, ensure your website pages are active and accessible and ensure you are linking to quality websites.

When creating content, focus on the same keywords and topics as the competition and put out engaging content for your specific audience. By creating quality content and creating an audience following, you’re boosting your Domain Authority. In addition, when other websites in your industry link to your website, it also boosts your score.
